Jaisalmer: Time for Golden Adventure And Much More To Do!

Jaisalmer, nicknamed “The Golden city”, a city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, located 575 kilometers (357 mi) west of the state capital Jaipur. Once known as Jaisalmer state it is a World Heritage Site. The town stands on a ridge of yellowish sandstone, crowned by a fort, which contains the palace and several ornate Jain temples.
It lies in the heart of the Thar Desert (the Great Indian Desert) and has a population of about 78,000. It is the administrative headquarters of Jaisalmer District.

Jaisalmer truly defines the royal adventure for you, lush palaces, Royal looking accommodation, camelback rides, late night bonfires in the desert, a starlit sky only for your disposal, and it almost feels like it’s too nice to be true. But it is, it is the truth and this beautiful truth awaits your arrival in time for the royal treatment.

The fort and town of JAISALMER were founded by Maharawal Jaisa in the year 1156 AD after having shifted his capital from Ludharva (18 Kms away from Jaisalmer) to a safer place. The ruling family of the erstwhile Jaisalmer State belongs to Bhati Clan of Yadu Rajputs of Chandrawasnshi (Lunar) race who claim descent from Lord Krishna, the defied hero who ruled at Dwarka.

The Jaisalmer city, as beautiful as a bride adorned with jewel-like golden Haveli’s, with its lake and temples and its culture proves how successfully the people of Rajasthan have tried to hold onto their roots. A city that has come back almost from the dead in the past half-century, Jaisalmer may be remote but it’s certainly not forgotten – indeed it’s one of Rajasthan’s biggest tourist destinations.

The Jaisalmer Fort, the fort is located along the southern edge of the city that bears its name and is perhaps one of the most striking monuments in the area, its dominant hilltop location making the sprawling towers of its fortifications visible for many miles around. It stands tall, proud of the fact that no attack or pressure has ever been able to nor will be able to shake the spirit of the city.

The fort’s massive yellow sandstone walls are a tawny lion color during the day, fading to honey-gold as the sun sets, thereby camouflaging the fort in the yellow desert. For this reason, it is also known as the Sonar Quila or Golden Fort.

Explore the colorful city by signing up for a tour, or take to the road yourself. Visit Jaisalmer Fort, Bada Bagh, Salim k Haveli, and Patwon Ki Haveli. Capture a lot of pictures with your family and loved ones.

The Desert Life

It’s impossible to say no to a good desert safari when you are in the Heart of the Thar desert, it’s one of the most exquisite and royal experiences you have when in Jaisalmer, there is a wide range of activities to choose from, camel safari, Jeep safari, Dune bashing, stay in the camps, star gazing, cultural evenings with Bonfires and the list goes as long as you want it to.

Jeep safaris and Dune bashing are comparatively modern-day additions which let you bash through the sand dunes like the Arabs do in the movies, well guess who else can feel like a movie star? You!!

You can choose from numerous services to numerous kind of vehicles you would like to take the safari in, the fun doubles up when you are offered a quad bike for individual safari’s where you can ride the desert alone and come back with all your adrenalin needs fulfilled.

Isn’t this everybody secret ‘perfect vacation’ idea?

Call your service provider and make prior plans and make sure to carry all your essentials.

If riding the dunes and enacting your ‘Prince of Persia’ dreams is not your thing, don’t you worry because the desert has exactly what your peace-seeking soul is looking for.

Staying in a desert camp and basking in the glow of the bonfire while star gazing is going to be your favorite thing for life once you experience that in Jaisalmer.

There are camps set up in regular intervals in the desert, far enough from civilization to let you hear the music of the silent night and as the stars twinkle brighter than before you don’t really realize when the camel riders humming has changed into a song and how staying up at midnight could feel so peaceful in an abandoned place like this.

Basic amenities like blankets and beds and washroom are available however you can add on any luxury in the world as long you are willing to. The camp owners are very helpful however it’s good to compare the prices around before settling down.

The nights chilly and the days soothingly warm, October to February is the ideal months to hit this desert and explore some Rajasthani culture while satisfying your inner wanderer.

Jaisalmer is often considered the star gazers paradise.

If you fear that staying in the camps and listening to folklore means missing out on the proper view of the desert then you are utterly wrong. Your camps have one more magic trick hidden under their sleeves, they can arrange Camel safari tours for you while you relax in your luxurious tents and plus a jeep safari or a planned tour would not cost you as much as you think.

Camel safaris are usually taken at dawn or dusk because I can only imagine how beautiful the golden desert would look while the sun paints its oranges all over the sky! Well, I guess we have to experience it to know it! Till then we can at least look at this beautiful picture while we plan our trip to the ‘Golden city’ of Rajasthan.
